BASF operates its steamcrackers, "heart" of verbund sites (Ludwigshafen, Germany 1965 and 1980; Antwerp, Belgium 1994; BASF, along with FINA Port Arthur, Texas, 2001; Nanjing, China 2005) mainly for captive use. In addition BASF markets cracker products e. g. within the chemical industry, refineries, plastic industry, steel- and automotive industry.
